Triangles
Last Wednesday, during Open day, 4H learned about triangles, and how they make structures stronger. We observed a video about the Tacoma Bridge swaying side to side before collapsing and discussed why it had collapsed. Next, we learned that Triangles can help a bridge be more stable as they distribute the forces acting on them more evenly and have less chance of collapsing. After that we got some bluetack and match sticks and had a go at making Triangle-based Pyramids (tetrahedrons). Then we attempted to make a cube with Triangles in it, which helped make the sides stronger. We watched Brainpop, which explained the forces acting on different types of bridges. by Eva and Lotus This week's merit award winners are Lotus, Sarah, Hayley and Oscar. Last week on June 21 we had a Japanese Immersion Day for Year 4 students. It was such fun!! We had seven students from Moruya High help out with the activities. The students’ names were Sophie, Jazzlyn, Jemma, Ella, Caitlyn, Dylan and James. They had all been exchange students in Japan and showed us a slideshow of their experiences. One activity was making Samurai hats out of newspaper. It was my favourite. after we had made the hat we googled our names in Japanese and wrote them on the hats. I also enjoyed trying to eat with chopsticks. We made miso soup, which tasted very strange, but we added noodles, carrot, broccoli and tofu to it. After we had eaten the solid stuff with the chopsticks we drank the soup from the bowl. Another thing we did was trace our bodies in chalk and label the body parts in Japanese. We also played an identikit game where we had to guess which face our partner was describing. Some students dressed up in kimonos too. I had a great time learning about Japanese things. by Laila The art of crane making originated in Japan and was one of the activities during our Japanese day. A student from Moruya High School helped us create a Samurai Hat and paper crane. The paper cranes were hung in a tree afterwards. My group, san (3) had the opportunity to make miso soup and eat the vegetables and noodles with chopsticks. After, we tasted some Japanese lollies. My favourite was a triangle-shaped, marshmallow/sherbet one. The high School student, Jemma showed us a Japanese toy given to her by her host family when she was on exchange. It was called a Kendama. The object is to get the purple ball onto three scooped out surfaces which varied in difficulty. Another fun activity was tracing our friends’ bodies in chalk and labelling their body parts in Japanese. Thanks for reading! By Lotus. |
